tar
tar is a commonly used file archiving utility (along with cpio and, less
often, pax).
Create archive
tar -cvf archive.tar file1 file2 # create, verbose, file
Adding files to an archive
tar -rvf archive.tar file3 # append, verbose, file
Please be aware that you can have multiple files of the same name in the archive.
Deleting files from an archive
tar --delete -f archive.tar file3
List archive contents
tar -tvf archive.tar # list, verbose, file
Extract archive
tar -xvf archive.tar # extract, verbose, file
Compress/decompress archive
You can use flags to compress/decompress archives when creating or
extracting them (-z for gzip, -j for bzip2, -J for xz).
